Circa late 1800's, this is a lovely and unusual silver egg-shaped locket.
It is of Austrian origin, and the entire outside casing is embossed with a uniform swirl pattern on the front and back of the locket.
The locket would have been once gold gilded, as you can still see the remnants of gold peeking through the crevices of the silver swirl patterns.

What makes this locket so charming, is that it opens up to reveal an empty space on one side... and then on the other side is actually a secret hinged wall - it is beautifully decorated to match the style of the locket and even has cut out details to further enhance the filigree style.

The little separating wall does hinge open with perfect ease and it reveals a secret compartment that still has the original puff from the previous owner.

It can be worn on almost any chain, but due to the locket's weightiness, a slightly thicker and heavier chain is recommended.
